OUR SIMPLE 4-STEP PROCESS
Fry Design Co.'s philosophy and customer-centered focus ensure that our clients are supported throughout the entire home design process, from concept to completion. We act as guides and advocates through the planning and design processes in order to collaborate and build your one-of-a-kind project together. You bring the dreams, we'll bring them to life.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU: DISCOVERY PHASE
During our "GETTING TO KNOW YOU" process we delve into what is important to you through visiting the site and asking a ton of questions designed to explore your hopes and dreams for your project.
SCHEMATIC DESIGN
During this phase, we work closely with our clients to brainstorm and translate their stories into a holistic idea on paper. This phase typically takes 2-4 weeks to complete, after which we'll meet again to unveil a full design package for your custom home plan.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
During the Design Development Phase, we are designing the cabinets, fixtures, and equipment for the kitchen, bathrooms, media room, outdoor living space, and beyond.
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
We're finally here. All the decisions are made. All the critical information that the builder and subcontractors will require to understand the design intent fully and build the house accurately.
Getting to Know You: Discovery Phase
The most important step in the design process begins with both listening to and understanding our clients. During our "GETTING TO KNOW YOU" envisioning process we delve into what is important to you through visiting the site and asking a ton of questions designed to explore your hopes and dreams for your project. We create a thorough base of knowledge that allows us to craft a design that will be unique to you and you alone.
We start this phase by asking you to complete a short survey to capture the main elements of the project. Once that is complete, we schedule a meeting on the property where the house will be built. This will allow us to understand the context and geographic opportunities present.
Next, we schedule another meeting at our office where we review everything we've discovered so far and then go through our project discovery questionnaire that digs deep into your wants and needs for your new dream home.
This phase normally takes between 2 to 3 weeks depending on the availability of the client.
The end result of this phase is the development of the "Program," which is used in the remaining phases to design and document the project.
Schematic Design
This is where the creative juices really start flowing in order to pull all of our initial thoughts, program information, and site details together to create a custom home building design that is perfect for you. During this phase, we work closely with our clients to brainstorm and translate their stories into a holistic idea on paper.
This may start out with pencil and tracing paper where we go through dozens of concepts quickly — often overlaying one idea over another, all the while pressing forward toward a floor plan that flows well from one room to another, providing the style and amenities that you've requested.
Fairly often we will request another face-to-face meeting to review progress as we go through the Schematic Design step of the process.
This phase typically takes 2-4 weeks to complete, after which we'll meet again to unveil a full schematic design package for your custom home plan.
Design Development
Now we're making some serious progress! With the Schematic Design step complete, we now have a rock-solid home floor plan and exterior elevations that fairly clearly illustrate the design intent of the house. Now it's time to delve into each and every room of the house and design every component that is needed.
During the Design Development Phase, we are designing the cabinets, fixtures, and equipment for the kitchen, bathrooms, media room, outdoor living space, and beyond. Here, inches matter! A well-designed kitchen is essential and knowing where all the fixtures and appliances go is critical to a fully comprehensive (and accurate) design.
Depending on the size of the house, this phase will take 2 to 4 weeks, but the end result is a highly documented home design package with the beginning of the project specifications.
Construction Documents
We're finally here. All the decisions are made. The home design is fully ready for dimensioning and annotating — all the critical information that the builder and subcontractors will require to understand the design intent fully and build the house accurately.
We may be tooting our own horns a little, but the Construction Document Phase is where we truly shine. The challenge is made — go find a better-documented set of construction documents — we dare you! Seriously, it is vital that what your builder builds from is a full, comprehensive, and complete set of construction documents. Anything short of that is an injustice to you, the homeowner. Our standard construction document set includes the following drawings:
